hi i brought my 2000 (x) galaxy zetec 19 TDI a little over a year ago and so far have had no problems with it

the problem is a few days ago the front wipers started sticking while they were returning to the parking setting and now they wont work at all

at times they look like they are going to work but after moving no more than a few millimeters they stop

any ideas what this could be? i dont think it is the switch/ stalk as the rear wiper still works as does the front washer jets

Hi lilbob, i have had the same problem with my galaxy 1.9tdi. The wiper linkage have a tendency to seize. The thing i did to correct this was to remove the wiper arms and the wiper linkage incl. motor. I then tried to manually move the linkage to see if it had seized which it had. You can remove 1 side of the linkage and clean the brass collar and pinion which rotate the wiper arms. Mine had oxidized bad enough for the wipers to stop working. After a good clean and greased ive had no problem . If you take it to a Garge they would tell you that you need a replacement and cost you a few hundred pounds and more. Good luck, hope ive answered your question.

[ cheers ill try that in the morning is it a hard job to do or not ???? how much work is it to strip it all out ?

Its not too bad a job, just basic tools, mark where the wiper blades are on the glass in Park position first.

Then its wiper arms off and the bulkhead panel thing.

Your biggest problem will be getting the spndles out, they may come ok or need penetrating oil, but be careful and take your time not to damage threads etc.

well i've got it all stripped out which only took me about an hour and a half which i thought was quite good (it was raining at the time) and the linkage is now sat on the kitchen floor soaking in wd40 it was the drivers side that has siezed so now the fun part begins

just put my linkage back together and now the wipers are try to sweep down wards towards the bonnet is it possible thaty one of you kind hearted people on here would be able to take a pic of the linkage on the drivers side so i can try and sort mine out as im resorting to putting the wipers in an upright position so they sweep down and claer the screen that way thanks to all that have replied and helped

would any one be able to measure the distance from the top of the screen to the top of each wiper as im struggling to get them to return to the parking position and the sweep arc doesnt seem as wide as it was before thanks all

My well lubed ones wipe right to the edge of the vertical part of the screen, if not a little beyond as a guide, but when parked are dead horiziontal with about 20mm between them, and you cannot see the lower one from the drivers seat.

thanks for that is there any chance you would measure from the top of the screen to the top of each wiper please that way i can set them properly if you could that would be great thanks

Funny that, I own a 2001 (51) Galaxy Zetec 2.3 petrol, and lent it to a friend to drive to the coast this week with her kids and all their kit. They had to be towed 100 miles in the pouring rain back home as the wipers had seized on them (How bad do I feel!). This hadn't happened to me before they went.

I've got it booked in at the local garage for Monday, and the bloke said to me "they make them from monkey metal, it'll be the mechanics jamming, or the motor given up" Niether, he warned me, were going to be cheap to fix, and when I told him how old the car was, he said "yeh, that's about right"

took me a few hours to srtip it out about an hour to free the drivers side 10 minutes to do the other then its just a case of piecing it all back together and when you have done it your self you get the smug feeling that you have saved a couple of hundred quid in all it cost me less than a fiver for all the bits i needed and did it in under a day in the pouring rain

stuff taking it to a garage to get it done crack open the socket set and give it a go your self you dont know till you try and if it does go wrong you can still take it to the garage to get it sorted theres plenty of advice on the subject on this forum

From the top of the screen where glass meets rubber, to the wiping edge of the top (drivers) wiper its 96cm

I got the hubby to strip it down this morning, and it's all been cleaned up and WD40 on all the moving parts. It does look like the grooves on the inside of the arm housing (alluminium) have worn in comparison to the bit that the arm fixes to (steel?), and you can see where it has rubbed, as if it is slipping. We think that is most likely the cause, as the motor works fine without the arms on. We are now looking at getting some new arms, although they are working for now!

Thanks for the tips on here, I saw some comments on another Galaxy site, and someone paid

did mine at the weekend just gone, after reading the other post momof4 i think it was. wipers packed in after a day out came home joined this site and after reading the other post momof4 i think it was. i was thinking of getting a garage to sort it for me that night but when i got up the next day i read the post again and thought im going to have a go my self it was so straight forward in the end it was easy no spare nusts and bolts when finished. the way i did it was do one end and put it back together then the other and back together so nothing got mixed up took 2 to 3 hours in all but if to do it again half the time i would say or less, get the thick tube in the vice and an ajustable spanner on the other end to twist back and forward as you tap the arm out as they say a bit at a time and wd40 all the time make sure the circlip is removed and the nut is on so you dont damage the threads hope this will be of help to you ............
